work > Notes on Territory

Notes on Territory examines histories of containment architectures -- cathedrals, prisons, castles, crucifixes -- and their relation to embodied freedom practices. The work takes two forms: One, a performance lecture on everything from the French Revolution to Charlie Kaufman's 2008 Synecdoche, New York to Harriet Jacobs’ and her life’s work relationship to cathedrals and prisons. Secondly, Notes on Territory: Meditation is a to-scale model of Jacobs' hiding place -- her loophole of retreat -- doubling as a lending library, sound bath station, and resting place.
